The interview is a two-way process. Employers ask questions to identify the best candidate for the role they are looking to fill, while you need to ask questions to determine if the position and the company are right for you.
Here are some great questions to ask at interview:
1. How has the position become available?
2. What is the culture of your organisation?
3. As a law firm, what is your USP? Why would a potential client want to work with your firm?
4. Who do you see as your main competitors? What makes you different or better than them?
5. Who will I be working with and responsible to? What are their backgrounds?
6. How do you appraise the performance of your employees?
7. What would I expect to be involved in during my first three, six or twelve months?
8. What are the long term prospects for the successful applicant? (be careful, employers often want to see what you are made of before there is talk of timescales for progression and want to feel your expectations of this are realistic)
9. What is your policy on training and continuous professional development?
10. How long have you (addressing the interviewer) worked here? What attracted you to the company and what are your motivations for working here?
11. How soon are you hoping to make an appointment?
12. What are the next steps?
13. And finally, is there any aspect of my background or experience that you would like me to clarify?
